I remember in high school sitting at the back of the classroom as I did with my so called buddies. I would finish my exam in half the time as the average kid did, and my small group of hipster wannabes going nowhere in life wanting a free ride, and sitting around me, like little piranhas waiting for me to finish my class exam, then grab it from my desk just to copy it word for word, and then pass it to the next freeloader usually 3 or 4 more losers. This copy and steal trend even followed me to college where one hipster buddy took 3 of my classes just to get his score up. Unfortunately, he had to drop out of college after taking a Statistical Analysis class with me, one of my favorite classes, did I tell you I’m a numbers guy and love to calculate predictive analysis. So my buddy hipster was up to no good in this class and had no brains for these formulas of permutations and combinations. This class had long desks for several students sitting side by side. I was at an end chair and my hipster buddy right next to me. Again, I finished my test with 20 minutes left and he managed to copy my test perfectly. The next day our professor ask the Statistical Analysis class, what’s the probability of two students sitting next to each other both having a 100% test score and that the written answers had identical wording and didn’t cheat on their test. Well the class was really amused by this puzzling question. The professor had an idea, let’s have the two students with this 100% test score retake the test tomorrow and have the 2 students in question sit at opposite ends of the class. Well you probably guessed only one of us showed up to retake the test….my hipster buddy dropped out. So what does this have to do with Bots? Guess what, everything!

Years before this Google article came out I had a chat with an owner of an exclusive Travel Agency of high end Boutique Hotels off the beaten track who covered 50 countries around the world. He had hired photographers and writers to search out and find these exclusive resorts not covered in the mainstream travel agencies in the early 2000’s. I’m not sure how the conversation came about then but he claimed he had to put up Firewalls and a membership only entrance to his web site because Google was stealing all his data, images and articles with their Bots. Understand he spent a fortune on photographers and writers to search out and find these exclusive resorts that no one else on the web were covering. He sent them cease and desist notices and called them criminals. I asked well how did his business model work if Google didn’t show his list of Boutique Hotels. He told me that he worked exclusively with Travel Agents that had to sign NDAs and also have Firewalls to block Bots and required that they have membership access to the data sold to these Travel Agents and their customers. This was the only way to protect his private exclusive Boutique Hotels data locations, addresses, contacts, images, rates, and vacancies etc.
At the time I didn’t realize how right he was about the theft that was being perpetrated. Here comes the PROOF, Google steps out being a search engine and becomes a Travel Agency to the World with mass marketing capabilities all from scraped DATA. No there is no record of Google hiring photographers and writers to search out and find these exclusive resorts, they simply just have all the DATA all of a sudden and they are competing with the likes of Expedia owned by Microsoft….I wonder where their DATA came from as well. Did Microsoft also hire photographers and writers to search out and find these exclusive resorts?
